Fast answer

Use CCTV when the cause needs to be seen

A CCTV inspection can show why a drain keeps blocking and where the problem sits inside the pipe. A solid blockage may need clearing first so the camera can travel and show the pipe wall.

CCTV is useful when

  1. 01The drain blocks again after clearing
  2. 02You need to know where the problem is in the pipe
  3. 03Repair or relining is being considered
  4. 04Strata, an insurer or an authority needs footage or a report

Looking inside the drain

See why the drain keeps blocking

CCTV is most useful when the same drain blocks again, the cause is unclear or repair is being considered. The line may need clearing before the camera can travel.

Electronic locating
The camera head or problem position needs to be marked from the surface.
03
Inspection after clearing
The obstruction has been removed and the pipe wall can be seen properly.

View all drain questions
Do I need CCTV for every blocked drain?

Not every time. It is most useful for repeat blockages, property purchases, suspected roots, damaged pipes, or unclear outdoor drainage issues.

Can CCTV find tree roots?

Yes. Camera footage can show root entry points, root mass, damaged joints, and whether the pipe may suit relining or needs another repair.

Can a drain camera pass through a complete blockage?

Often it cannot. Standing water, debris and a solid obstruction can prevent travel or hide the pipe wall, so enough flow may need to be restored before the inspection.

Can CCTV locate the damaged section from the surface?

Where electronic locating is included and the signal can be read, the camera head or problem position can be marked from the surface. Access and site conditions affect what can be located.

What should I receive after a CCTV inspection?

Before booking, ask whether the inspection includes an explanation of the pipe condition, recorded footage, electronic locating or a written report.
